AAHS Program Description
Technology
The freshman Computer Applications course teaches applications including MS Office components, Photoshop, Filemaker, Dreamweaver, and iMovie. In addition the course demonstrates modern searching techniques and ethical use of Web 2.0 technologies such as blogs, wikis, and podcasts. The sophomore Principles of Computer Technology course covers basic principles of computer technology and programming, including investigations of medical informatics, robotics, and artificial intelligence. The junior-level elective robotics course extends the students knowledge of programming, and introduces design and problem solving skills with Lego NXT robots.
Social Studies
Social Studies is a requirement for the first three years and is offered as an elective in Senior year. Study begins with a global perspective with the Freshman course, World Cultures. American history spans Sophomore and Junior years. Health issues are emphasized in all three courses. As seniors, Allied students have the option of taking Ethics and Public Policy. This course provides a foundation through the knowledge of constitutional rights, political philosophy, media analysis and macroeconomics to understand current issues with a concentration on bioethics and environmental ethics.
English
The focus of English classes at AAHS is to refine the skills of reading, writing, speaking, and researching. In 9th grade, the curriculum focuses on Non-Western World Literature, which parallels the 9th grade World Cultures curriculum. In 10th grade, students further their study of literature and writing with American works. In 11th grade, students concentrate on the best American literature of the 20th & 21st centuries. They also have an intense study of Shakespeare's Hamlet, along with a variety of other classic plays. In 12th grade, students are responsible for college-level writing, researching and interpreting skills. The curriculum focuses on medical ethics and science fiction works.
World Languages
Students may select either Spanish or Latin upon entry to AAHS; once students begin a language, they may not switch to a different one. As well, taking a second language is not possible due to the intense nature of the thematic program. AAHS offers a continuing program in Latin and Spanish. Spanish includes a sequential program in levels 1-5, while Latin offers levels 1-4. A World Language class is required for Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors. In the senior year, a fourth year of World Language study is an elective. A placement test, which includes written, oral, and reading sections, determines the starting level for Spanish instruction at either level 1 or 2.
